SUNDAY'S WELL CHARITY CHALLENGE
"When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it." The words of Henry Ford seemed strangely appropriate as 38 Sunday's Well members gathered in the club car park at 5am on June 23rd for their Charity Challenge in aid of Cork Arc Cancer Support House. On a day when sunshine happily prevailed amidst a week of heavy rainfall, the combined test of cycling Cork to Killarney followed immediately by a summit of Carauntoohil focused the mind of all participants. After weeks of spinning classes, trial runs on open roads, and practice treks of the Reeks, the Big Day had finally arrived. Bolstered by the volunteer support crew who provided much appreciated refreshment and relentless encouragement all along the route, the cyclists grappled for position through the potholes, road works and those hellish headwinds on the county bounds. For those of us who hadn't endured this much biking since teenage years, the saddle sores were scars of battle proudly worn! The first bikes crossed the line in Killarney in 3 hours with the rest arriving shortly afterwards. With just enough time for coffee and sandwiches, the group then set off for the mountains as ominous clouds gathered overhead. With careful route selection and head counts at regular intervals, we trekked through the treacherous loose rock of O'Shea's Gully onward and upward to our mist-shrouded goal looming in the distance. Finally reaching Carauntoohill's summit after many an extra heave on tired limbs, we were treated to the minor miracle of clear blue skies and the awesome glory of Ireland's most spectacular views. Never did our native soil look so magnificent! Needless to say, the night's festivities in Murphy's Pub were long and suitably well oiled completed with a great music session (who knew we had so many excellent singers?!). A special thank you to John Walsh, Mike Petersen, Joe Devitt, Marie Duffy, Siobhan Riordan, Declan Bray plus all the organisers and support teams for the planning and preparation that brought us through this wonderful test without even a twisted ankle. And a special pat on the back to that lady whose fear of heights was finally overcome on Ireland's highest mountain. They'll be no stopping you now, girl!! (contributed by John Daly, 2007)
